Let’s talk food!
I have been able to try lots of yummy and different foods since I’ve been in Spain! But also some not so yummy foods….
This post is going to be some of the most popular foods I have tried since I have been here. I know there are so many foods I have yet to try but here are just some of the foods I have had multiple times.
At least once a week, I get to go out and try new foods with other teachers from my school. Each time we go to eat, we have some of these featured foods plus a few new things too.
When we go out to dinner we usually do tapas and share everything.
One of the most popular tapas I have had here is called “Papas Bravas” which is potatoes with Aioli and some sort of “spicy” sauce (which isn’t actually spicy at all…).
I really like papas bravas – they’re a good hardy food. Spanish people describe then as being a little spicy but for me personally I have yet to have any that are actually even a little bit spicy ( my personal opinion ).
Another VERY popular tapa I have had at literally every single restaurant I have been to since moving here is called “Croquetas”. These are interesting but very tasty. I can only describe them as puréed chicken or ham deep fried. Sounds weird, right? But they are these little deep fried ‘nugget’ like things that when you bite into them have the texture of mashed potatoes but taste like ham or chicken. And I am probably describing them very wrong but this is how I think of them every time I have one.
Another very popular dish here is grilled Cuttlefish. This usually has very minimal flavor and is sprinkled with lemon ( and something green but I am unsure of what that is exactly). But the weird thing here is that you dip it into plain mayonnaise?? This is so weird to me. You usually get a little side bowl just of mayonnaise to dip your pieces of cuttlefish straight into. People here LOVE this but I haven’t quite acquired a taste for this combination.
The next item is very simple but very good. The prawns here are amazing. They are cooked in olive oil and garlic. They are a 10/10. Big Fan.
Fun fact: since I have been here I have found out that I like Blood Sausage! I never thought in my life that I would like this but it is actually very tasty. It has always sounded very unappealing and intimidating to me but I was pleasantly surprised. It is weirdly sweet and has more of a mushy texture than that of a normal sausage. Normal sausage is a lot firmer and can sometimes be a little chewy whereas blood sausage here is more mushy and soft.
Overall, I have a had a great time and great experiences trying these foods. All the foods on this post are ones that I have enjoyed getting to try.
If you come to Spain, I highly recommend trying all the foods featured on this page! They are all delicious and a great part of the Spanish culture!
( I would even say to try the Cuttlefish with mayonnaise – if the spanish like it, it can’t be too bad, right? But you should try it for yourself and see! )
I hope you enjoyed this little bit of Spanish cuisine! I will be posting more foods as I try them!
