Alarcón

I got to visit my first ever castle!!

I live in a small town in central Spain. Not far from me is this small medieval village with its very own castle!

I am very fortunate to have a teacher and her family who are willing to show me parts of spanish history like this.

This castle was built in the 8th century and was later taken over by King Alfonso VIII in the 12th century.

It was home to the Marquises de Villena and later became the home of the famous writer Don Juan Manuel.

As this sign posted on the castle walls says:
To the infant Don. Juan Manuel
Distinguished writer
He who was from this village and Alarcon castle
In the VII century of his birth
1282-1982
The Cuenca Academy of Arts and Letters.

This castle has been around since the 8th century and has now been turned into a hotel.

A guard tower out in the distance ( one of many ).

Pictured below is the village of Alarcón which surrounds the castle. It is very quaint and was described to me as “charming” and “magical”.

The church of Alarcón.

It is so crazy to think that I walked through a castle and touched a building that has been around since the 8th century. The history here is amazing.
