Since I have been in Spain, I have been very open to trying new foods. I want to experience authentic Spanish cuisine while I’m here. I haven’t had much Spanish food before so I am very new to this whole food scene.

Once a week, all the teachers here get together for dinner and share a bunch of food. I really enjoy these events because it gives me the perfect opportunity to eat what the spaniards eat. The teachers order their favorite Spanish foods and I get to sit back and enjoy them.

Well…. for the most part.

Everything I have had in Spain has been pretty good. All with the exception of PIG EARS. Yes, you read that right. Pig ears. Supposedly they are a Spanish delicacy here but man oh man….

This had been the one food so far that I have tried that I do NOT like. Not even in the slightest.

Let me give you a description. When I think of pig ears I think of those raw hide treats for your dogs. They’re extremely hard and dogs can spend days on end just chewing on the one crunchy ear.

That was what I went into this situation expecting: super hard and crunchy ears that feel like they’re going to break your teeth. WRONG. Who would have guessed that eating pig ears would be like chewing a warm, thick, gooey, sticky piece of Hubba Bubba Gum that tastes so strongly of old pig. I sure didn’t.

And immediately after bitting into the ear I knew I did not like it and had to get it out of my mouth immediately! So I tried to politely spit it out and epically failed. The ear had created some sort of sticky cohesive between my top and bottom teeth creating a sort of spider web effect inside my mouth. It was horrible, I couldn’t get this spider web of pig ear goo out of my mouth. It completely covered every crevice of my teeth.

And I do not mean to rude or disrespectful. I understand that this is a well loved food here in Spain. However, it is definitely not for me. Maybe if it was crunchy like I had imagined it would have been better? I’m not too sure.

The thing that really got me was the texture and the gooey / stickiness of it. I have never eaten anything like it. And then add in the flavor of old pig and it is a hard no for me.

I am happy to be out here and being able to experience new foods. And at least now I can say I have tried pigs ears and I can say with complete confidence that I DO NOT enjoy them. But to each their own.

Pigs Ears:

0 / 5 Stars – For me it might actually be even less than a 0 and most Spaniards may beg to differ. But for now a 0/5 will suffice.
